Musical theatre is the greatest medium ever created and musical improv is some of the most fun you can have on stage. So why does it often feel harder than it needs to be? Usually, it's because players don't know WHY they're singing and they haven't built up the momentum to fly; like trying to jump a canyon on a skateboard.
The legendary Howard Ashman said, "when the feelings are too strong to say, we sing. And when they're too strong to sing, we dance." So how do we make musical improv better and with greater ease? The answer to both is to "commit to a feeling." Whether you're playing it straight or for comedic effect, whether you're shy about singing or a seasoned vocalist, knowing how to find a strong feeling and fuel it for yourself and others is the magic sauce that makes everything delicious. Let's turn your spark into a flame. In this workshop you will learn: • How to construct meaningful, memorable, and memeable musicals in the moment. • How to deliver lyrics that will hit the heart strings and/or the funny bones. • How to work together to lift a teammate into a song. • An easy intro to counterpoints: those big dramatic moments when everyone sings different complementary melodies; think Les Miserables! • An approach to musical improv that gets you out of your head and opens the brilliant bursting bag of emotions in your chest. This workshop is suitable for everyone: from beginners through intermediate and advanced players looking for a tune up and some new tools. |
